William S."Bill" Jones, 81, of 221 E. Vaughn St., Ironwood, died Thursday, June 21, 2007, in Ironwood. He was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Black River Falls, Wis., son of the late Sigurd and Esther (Hawkinson) Jones, and came to Ironwood at the age of 8, where he attended local schools and Luther L. Wright High School. Bill entered the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II until his honorable discharge as a seaman first class in 1946, then entered the U.S. Army in 1947, serving in Germany until his honorable discharge as a sergeant in 1952. Returning to Ironwood, he worked for P.J. Nickel Construction Co. for several years, was employed at White Pine Copper Co. for a time, then operated the Commercial Hotel, which later became the Jones Hotel, in downtown Ironwood, retiring in 1997. Bill was a member of Ironwood American Legion Post 5 and Ironwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1823. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years, and especially enjoyed spending time at his son's cottage at Lake Gogebic. He was married to the former Mary Jane Barnaby on Aug. 6, 1955 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood. She preceded him in death on May 28, 1991. Surviving are three sons, James, Lake Gogebic, and Daniel and Jerome, both of Menominee; a daughter, Kathryn Jones, Ironwood; brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Frank and Lee Barnaby, Duluth, Minn., George DeMario, Ironwood, and Rita Jones, Orange, Calif.; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by a brother, John, a sister, Marjorie Keaton, his father-and-mother-in-law, Frank and Kathryn Barnaby, and a sister-in-law, Kathryn DeMario. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 25, at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, pastor of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard, with luncheon to follow at the Iron Nugget in downtown Hurley. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.
