Obituary

William H. "Bill" Jacobson, 81, of Erwin Township, Ironwood, went to be with his Lord Monday, April 11, 2011, surrounded by his loving family, in Ironwood.      Bill was born March 27, 1930, in Ironwood, son of the late Elmer and Laina (Brown) Jacobson, attended Roosevelt Grade School, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1949. He then entered the U.S. Army on May 10, 1951, serving in Alaska during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged as a corporal on April 2, 1953.           Following his discharge, Bill returned to Ironwood and worked in the Penokee Mine until its closing. He then worked in construction and retired as a welder from White Pine Copper Co. In his retirement, he was employed with Erickson Engineering of Ironwood.      Bill was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood, where he served as usher and trustee, and Ironwood American Legion Post 5. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.      On Sept. 24, 1955, he was united in marriage to Dora H. Mattila at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. H.P. Esala. Dora survives.      Also surviving are two sons, Roger, of Ironwood, and Mark (Jane), Marquette; three daughters, Cheryl (Randy) Sherman, Marshfield, Wis., Patti (Rance) Lefever, Peoria, Ariz., and Dr. Amy (David II) Schimke, M.D., Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Marie, Paul and Matt Sherman, Marshfield, and Aubrie Jacobson, Marquette; brother-in-laws, Blaise Erickson, Ironwood and Arizona, and Cliff Koivisto, Ironwood; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.      Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mabel Worthington, and his step-father, Ray Hagstrom.        In accordance with Bill's wishes, cremation has taken place.      A memorial service will be held Friday, April 15, at 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5104 E. Margaret St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Wes "Bo" Baumeister, officiating.      Committal will take place at the church, where a flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by representatives of the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.      Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.      Inurnment will be in the American Legion section of Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, later this spring.      Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday.      In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church.      To view Bill's obituary online, sign his guestbook and express condolences, visit mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.
