Obituary

Wesley C. Allison, 84, of 360 Johnson Rd., Wakefield Township, died Monday evening, Aug. 3, 2009, in Ironwood. He was born Nov. 15, 1924, in Bessemer Township, son of the late Bruce and Mary (Halme) Allison, attended Newport Grade School in Ironwood, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force on Aug. 2, 1943, serving stateside with the 467th Bomb Group in Clovis, N.M., and was honorably discharged on March 16, 1946. Following his discharge, Wesley moved to El Monte, Calif. and worked at the First Security National Bank in Alhambra, Calif. Returning to Ironwood, he worked for a time at the First National Bank, and was employed as a sales clerk at Sears-Roebuck & Co. in downtown Ironwood for 25 years. He then purchased Erickson-Coleman Hardware in Ironwood, operating it for 16 years until his retirement in 1991. Wesley was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield. An avid bowler, he bowled in Range area leagues for many years. He enjoyed his home and spending quality time with his family. On July 13, 1946, he was married to the former Sylvia E. Wiemeri in Alhambra. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Dennis (Connie), Apple Valley, Minn., and daughter, Cindy (Michael) Verbanac, Rosemount, Minn.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Elvira Black, Julie Allison and Jenny Howarth. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce and Richard. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Nancy Kauppi officiating. Committal services and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, where a flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by representatives of the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. A luncheon reception will be held at the Iron Nugget in downtown Hurley immediately upon return from the cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday. Pallbearers will be Mark Kiecker, Jan Cichocki, David and Michael Verbanac, and Leslie and Jim Wuorinen.
