Viola I. Kangas, 89, a longtime Ironwood, Mich. resident, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, with her family by her side, at St. Joseph Residence in New London, Wis. Viola was born on June 24, 1919, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Ronsala) Kytola, and attended Ironwood schools. She married John E. "Jiggs" Kangas on May 10, 1938. He preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 2000. Viola was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood where she was active in the Quilters and Esther Circle, and was a member of the Ironwood Township Sportsman's Club and a past president of the Eagles Auxiliary.She was a homemaker who also assisted other families with child care and care of their homes. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Viola is survived by her daughters, Ardythe (Gerald) Korpela of Hortonville, Wis. and Judith (Mathew) Rawluszki of AuGres, Mich.; five grandchildren, Brett (Pam) Korpela, Watertown, Wis., Brenda (Tim) Krueger, Cambridge, Wis., Larry Joswiak, Saginaw, Mich., David (Melanie) Joswiak, Hemlock, Mich., and Carol (John) Whitney, Charlevoix, Mich.; fifteen great-grandchildren, Shannon, Patrick, Sarah, Parker, Kaila, Nicole, Megan, Adam, Mitchell, Abbey, Lindsay, Lauren, Madelyn, Kyle and Emily; as well as many dear nieces, nephews and friends. Besides her parents and husband, Viola was preceded in death by brothers, Oscar and Leo Kytola; and sisters, Aili Aho, Elma Bergman and Elsie Carr. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Francis Strong officiating. Committal services will take place at the church, with luncheon to follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday. Pallbearers will be Brett Korpela, Brenda and Tim Krueger, David Joswiak, and Carol and John Whitney.
