With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Theodore (Ted) Erspamer, 95, of Hurley, who passed away peacefully on July 21st in Appleton, WI, with his family by his side.

Ted was born on June 3rd, 1931, in Ironwood, MI. He was the son of Leno and Mary (Babe) Erspamer. Ted graduated from Hurley High School in 1949. He served in the United States Navy from 1951-1955. Ted married the love of his life, Gretchen Pfeiffer, on August 3rd, 1957, in Mercer, WI. They celebrated 45 years of marriage before her passing in 2002. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Ruth, parents, and brothers Emmett, Joseph (Copper), Edward, and sister Marie.

Ted attended the University of Wisconsin, Superior. He worked at Paul’s store in Hurley, WI, and Antigo, WI from 1957-1973. He served as Chief of Police in Hurley from 1974-1992. He was a member of St. Mary’s church in Hurley.

Ted was a proud father to Jane Clemens (Andy Nelson), Ironwood, MI; Dan, Punta Gorda, Florida; Anne Peterson (George), Appleton, WI; Sam (Melanie), Medford, WI; Bill (Tara), Menasha, WI; Bob (Melinda), Tempe, AZ; Tom (Tami) Arena, WI. Ted was also surrounded by the love of 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by very special nieces and nephews and many friends, including Mary Kay Welch and his morning coffee crew.

Ted believed that life was meant to be lived, and he did just that - whether traveling, sharing stories with friends, or enjoying time with family, he made every moment count. He built friendships that lasted a lifetime and had a great sense of humor. He loved people, and they loved him back. To those who knew him, he was more than a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, or neighbor; he was a true legend. His legacy is found not only in the stories he leaves behind but in the countless lives he touched.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley, WI on August 1st at 11:00 am with Fr. Raj Sunkura officiating, with visitation prior starting at 10:00 am until the time of Mass. Full military honors will be conducted at St. Mary Cemetery by Hurley American Legion Post 58 and VFW Post 1580. Following the services, the family invites everyone to gather at Sharon’s Coffee Company in Hurley to share memories and celebrate Ted’s life.
