Obituary

T. Leonard Nyquist, 96, of 515 E. Vaughn St., Pioneer Park, Ironwood, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, in Ironwood.      He was born April 11, 1914, in Ironwood, son of the late Sam and Emma (Ojanpaa) Nyquist, and attended Ironwood schools. He worked on the family farm in Saxon, Wis., and was employed in carpentry work and logging and woods work in the area. He then was employed as a carpenter/supervisor in residential building construction in Waukegan, Ill. for 23 years, retiring in 1971 and moving to Rhinelander, Wis. He returned to Ironwood in 1994.      Leonard was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ironwood, the oldest living member of Local 250 in Waukegan, and a member of the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters Local 250. He enjoyed woodworking.      On Dec. 31, 1938, he was united in marriage to Ina M. Heikkinen in Saxon. She preceded him in death on May 23, 1993.      Surviving are eight beloved nieces, Rochelle (Rod) Erickson, Ironwood Township, Kathleen (Ray) Coullard, Rose City, Mich., Dawn (Bill) Peck, Montreal, Wis., Carol (Bill) Runnerstrom, Waukegan, Pat Kangas, Montreal, Karen (Paul) Hagemann, Kimball, Wis., Judy Peterson, Superior, Wis., and Kathleen Kangas, Dousman, Wis.      Besides his parents and wife, Leonard was preceded in death by a brother, Tauno Nyquist; sisters, Ina LeGeault and Erma Kangas; nephews, Randall Nyquist and Elwood LeGeault; brothers-in-law, Henry LeGeault and Sam Kangas; sister-in-law, Virginia Nyquist; and special friend, Helen Cedarstrom.      Out of respect for Leonard's wishes, cremation has taken place.      Memorial services will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 111 So. Curry St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Tom Wagner officiating.      Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall.      Private committal and interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Saxon.      Relatives and friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gogebic Community College Foundation, E4946 Jackson Rd., Ironwood, Mich. 49938, to be used for the building trades program.      To view Leonard's obituary online, sign the guestbook and express condolences, visit mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.
