Susan M. Paterno, 62, of 1305 W.
Lead St., Bessemer, Mich., died unexpectedly Saturday, June 5, 2010, in
Hurley. The former Susan M. Halberg was born May 6,
1948, in Wakefield, Mich., daughter of Ruth (Lenzen) and the late Clarence
Halberg. She attended Wakefield schools and graduated from Wakefield High School
in 1966. She then moved to Milwaukee where she was employed in secretarial work
at Marquette University, returning to Wakefield in the early 1970's where she
was employed seasonally in office work at Big Powderhorn Mountain. Susan was married to Tony Paterno on Feb. 14,
1987 in Mercer, by Judge Pat Madden. The couple resided in Las Vegas for two
years where Susan was employed at the Vista Delray Rental Agency, then moved to
Bessemer, where she worked for Ray Brown and at Blackjack Ski Resort. She then
was employed as a bookkeeper at Big Powderhorn Mountain until her retirement in
Nov. 2009. Susan enjoyed doing puzzles, gardening,
playing marbles, and collecting coins, snowmen and steins. She also enjoyed
girl's nights. She looked forward to her yearly trips to Disney World in
Orlando, Fla., and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She
attended Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. Surviving are her husband, Tony, of 23 years;
a daughter, Stephanie Paterno, Bessemer; her mother, Ruth Halberg, King;
stepson, Linton Paterno, stepdaughter, Tracy Paterno, and stepgrandson, Cody
Barbri, all of Ocala, Fla.; five brothers, Howie (Joanne) Halberg, Middle Town,
Ohio, Jim (Teresa) Halberg, Sun Prairie, Dan (Debbie) Halberg, Baraboo, Roger
(Adele) Halberg, Savage, Minn., and Randy (Tina) Halberg, Oshkosh; five sisters,
Diane (George) Monti, Fairwater, twin sister Sandy (Keith) Johnson, Sioux Falls,
So. Dak., Julie Coleman, Madison, Karen (Darwin) Daane, Menasha, and Linda (Tim)
McElrone, Greenfield; mother-in-law, Olga Paterno, Australia; two honorary
grandchildren, Zak and Kelsey Stella, Franklin; brothers-and-sisters-in-law,
John and Cheryl Paterno, Australia, and Liana and Mike Saari, Hurley; numerous
nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and a host of
friends. Besides her father, Clarence Halberg, who died
in 2007, Susan was preceded in death by a nephew, Tim Johnson, in 2006; and her
father-in-law, Tarcisio Paterno, in 2001. Out of respect for Susan's wishes, cremation
has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, June 11, from
noon to the 1p.m.memorial services, at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N.
Lowell St., in Ironwood. The Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, pastor of Our Lady of Peace
Catholic Church in Ironwood, will officiate. Rite of Committal will take place at the
funeral home, with luncheon to follow at the Iron Nugget in downtown
