Obituary

Sharon I      Sharon I. Kinnunen, 71, of 11550 N. County Rd. C, Hurley ,  died Monday, January 18, 2010, in Hurley,  after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.      She was born July, 31, 1938, in Ironwood, Mich., daughter of the late Charles and Helen (Palmquist) Steele. She graduated from Saxon High School  with the Class of 1956. On July 21, 1956, she was married to Richard W. Kinnunen.      Sharon farmed with her husband and raised four children. She then embarked upon a second career where she worked for 32 years as a fabric and crafts sales consultant at the Ben Franklin Store.      Sharon was a gifted homemaker who excelled in many aspects of sewing, knitting, painting, crafts, etc. Her talents won her many awards including her annual exhibits at the Iron County Fair. She enjoyed flower gardening and bird watching, especially her humming birds.      She is survived by her husband, Richard W. Kinnunen; one daughter, Candy (Dennis) Gilbertson, Delano, MN; three sons, Richard A. (Norma) Kinnunen, Maple Grove, MN; Wayne (Janice) Kinnunen, Elburn, IL; and Jeff Kinnunen, Fennville, MI; seven grandchildren, Leslie Gilbertson, Seattle, WA; Leah (Jacob) Anderson, Long Lake, MN; Matt Gilbertson, Plymouth, MN; Rachel Kinnunen, Maple Grove, MN; Carla Kinnunen, Maple Grove, MN; Brett Kinnunen, Elburn, IL; and Molly Kinnunen, Elburn, IL.; two sisters, Audrey Sanger, Bessemer, MI, and Pat (Fritz) Poeske , Wausau, WI; a brother, Roger (Marge) Steele, Wofford Heights, CA; and many nieces and nephews.      Besides her parents, Sharon was preceded in death by a sister, Joan.      Cremation has taken place in accordance with her wishes.      Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 111 So. Curry St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Francis Strong officiating.      Committal will take place at the church, with luncheon to follow at the Iron Nugget in downtown Hurley.      Spring inurnment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Saxon.      Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday.      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hurley School District Art Program, 5503 W.
