Samuel J. Davey, 100, of 260 E. Cloverland Drive, Ironwood, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, in Ironwood. He was born June 23, 1908, in Ironwood, son of the late Samuel and Ida (Wilcox) Davey, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1927, where he was very proud to play football under Coach Black. He then attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Sam owned and operated Davey's Garage and Cabins in Ironwood prior to entering the U.S. Army Air Corps on March 16, 1942, serving in New Guinea in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant on Dec. 30, 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to his business in Ironwood, and in 1957, built Davey's Motel on Cloverland Drive, operating it until his retirement in 1977. Sam was a member and past commander of Ironwood American Legion Post 5 and a member of Ironwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1823. An avid ski jumper in his younger days, he was a member and past board president of Copper Peak Inc., where he was very involved in judging ski flying over the years. He enjoyed golfing and was a past member of the Gogebic Country Club, and also enjoyed traveling. He loved to hunt elk in Wyoming and Montana and was a big Green Bay Packer fan. On Nov. 1, 1947, Sam was married to the former Josephine Manzio of Montreal, Wis. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Ironwood, by the late Rev. Frank Ronkowski. She preceded him in death on June 21, 2005. Surviving are a son, Samuel (Anne) III, two grandchildren, Samuel Davey IV and Jill Marie Davey, and a good friend, Rusty Malovrh, all of Ironwood. Besides his parents and wife, Sam was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, John, Bill and Leslie; and a sister, Lucille Zeh. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. Committal services and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, where full miliitary rites will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will be served at the Iron Nugget in downtown Hurley immediately upon return from the cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday. Pallbearers will be Sam Davey III and Sam Davey IV, Robert Semo Jr., John Semo, Charlie Semo and Rusty Malovrh.
