Obituary

Salvatore "Sam" A. Gianfortune, 70, of Hurley WI, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital with family by his side.

Sam was born on August 30, 1953, in Chicago to Salvatore "Sal" and Anne (Cortese) Gianfortune. He attended Von Steuben High School. He was a chef for 46 years in Chicago, he made, wrote, and served his recipes on the menu, and later retired in 2017 in Ironwood MI. He had a passion for music, playing guitar and drums and writing his own sheet music. He played with brother Paul Dietz, and close friends Robert Nesmith and Ralph. He enjoyed telling lifetime stories and never failed to crack a joke. His pride and joy were always his daughters and grandchildren, they filled him with love and purpose. He had a love for animals and fishing.

Sam is survived by 4 daughters, Stephanie (Robert) Stenroos, Nina Gianfortune, Sammie (Jon) Gianfortune-Hernandez, and Christine Juarez. Sister Anne (John) and Brother Vince (Donna). 12 grandchildren, Nicole Jameson, Alyssa Eliason, Kyle Eliason, Rebecca Stenroos, Anthony Stenroos, Riley Simpson, Emily Muszynski, Johnathan Hernandez, Destiny Santana, Ariana Juarez, Sarah Hernandez, Anthony Luciano. Nieces Natalie, Sarah, Nephews Anthony, and Nicholas. Also surviving close friends JoJo, Mary Nesmith, and many others.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Nicholas (17 months) and Paul, grandson Derek Santana-Pieper, nephew Michael, and close friends Robert and Ralph.

Per Sam's wishes, no formal services are taking place. Celebration of life will be taking place on August 31, 2024.

The family would like to thank Aspirus Ironwood Hospital staff, and Regional Hospice in the care of our beloved Sam, and a special thank you to his favorite nurse, Angela Butzke.
