Obituary

Roy W. Perkovich, 89, of Ironwood, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, in Ironwood.      He was born June 11, 1922, in Ironwood, son of the late Victor and Manda (Mesich) Perkovich, attended St. Ambrose Grade School and Luther L. Wright High School, and worked at Camp Norrie for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He then  entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II as a P-38 Lightning mechanic in the Phillippine Islands.       Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Ironwood and worked in the Peterson Mine until its closing. He then was employed briefly for the Cherne Co., and taught welding on the high school level as well as in adult education classes for 19 years at Luther L. Wright High School, retiring in 1987.      Roy was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. He enjoyed gardening and loved his faith.      Surviving are nephews and nieces, to include Peter (Barb) Perkovich, Bessemer, Paul Perkovich, Shakopee, Minn., Heidi (Barry) Klein, Ironwood, Michele (John) Stilson, Gurnee, Ill., and Michael Miheve, Mercer, Wis.; a grandnephew, Adam Perkovich, Keystone, Colo.; three grandnieces, Mandy and Melanie Stilson, Gurnee, and Danielle Miheve, Mercer; and several cousins.      Besides his parents, Roy was preceded in death by three brothers, Fr. Perky SCJ, and Mark and John Perkovich; four sisters, Dorothy Miheve, Amelia Perkovich, Anne Perky and Sister Roseaire OSF; and a grandnephew, Jan Perkovich, on Oct. 27, 1995.      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation in the St. Joseph Family Room at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace  Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant.      Rite of Committal will take place in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, where a flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by representatives of the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.      Luncheon will follow at Tacconelli's in downtown Ironwood.      Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student Program, 108 So.
