Roy Donald Jakeway, 72, of
211 So. Mansfield St., Ironwood, affectionately known as Jake or Donnie, died
peacefully Saturday, June 23, 2012, in his home, surrounded by his loving
family, following a lengthy illness. He was born Dec. 31, 1939, in Ironwood, son of
the late Roy and Isabelle (Sendek) Jakeway, and graduated from Luther L. Wright
High School in 1957. Roy was a very talented basketball player, once holding
the single game scoring record for the Red Devils. After graduation he entered
the U.S. Air Force, serving in Japan, on Wake Island, and in Germany until his
honorable discharge, retiring from the Air Force Reserves with the rank of
SMSgt in Dec. of 1987. Roy was employed by the Federal Aviation
Administration as a safety inspector from 1979 until his retirement in 1994. He
was very well liked and respected by all of his peers at the FAA. Upon
retirement, he worked as liaison with USA Jet and the FAA until 1998 when he
eventually returned home to Ironwood. Roy was a member of Ironwood American Legion
Post 5 and a former member of the Klassic Kruisers Car Club. His most enjoyable
hobby was restoring old cars. Throughout his lifetime he had restored several
vehicles, including a Volkswagen Bug, and his prized possessions, a ' 64 1/2 and
a ' 66 Mustang. Both Mustangs had won numerous awards in car shows throughout
the state. He also especially enjoyed spending time with his children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was looked up to by his family not
only as a mentor, but as a hero, always making sure that his family came
first. On May 16, 1961, he married Inge Lili Montag
in Frankfurt, Germany while serving in the Air Force. In 2011 they celebrated
their life long journey together when they reached their 50th Anniversary. Inge
was the love of his life and was affectionately known as Schatzi, the German
word for sweetheart. Inge preceded him in death on July 13, 2011. Surviving are a son, Robert (Vicki), Brooklyn;
three daughters, Brenda Jakeway, Ironwood, Jessica (Roger) Hurd, Allen Park, and
Ursula (Hubertus) Kromm, Grafenhausen, Germany; five grandchildren, Jay
(Kristin), Josh, Kyle, Amanda and Eric; four great-grandchildren, Kyler, Konnor,

Feb. 12, 2005. Out of respect for Roy's wishes, cremation has
taken place. Graveside services and committal will be
