Ronald H. Nygard Sr., 75, of 519 Bonnie St., Ironwood, died Saturday evening, May 17, 2008, in his home, following a lengthy illness. Ron was born Aug. 23, 1932, in Hurley, Wis., son of the late Amund and Verna (Hill) Nygard, attended St. Mary's Grade School, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1951. He worked for various area contractors for many years, and was self-employed as a roofing contractor from 1975 to his retirement in 1994. Ron attended Wesley United Methodist Church in Ironwood. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, and enjoyed deer hunting in his younger years and spending time at camp. He also enjoyed his "happy hour" with all of his friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On Sept. 4, 1954, he married the former Marilyn G. Eplett at the Newport Methodist Church in Ironwood. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Ronald H. Jr. (Kristie), Ironwood; four daughters, Renee Anderson (Harry Martin), Ironwood, Jane (Martin) Polimus, Akron, Ohio, Tina (John) Olkonen, Ironwood, and Ronda (Bill) Olkonen, Oma, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Angela (Tom) Wisniewski, Sparta, Wis., Melissa, Michelle and Debbie Dearduff, all of Akron, Christopher Anderson, Ironwood, Logan and Mattea Olkonen, Oma, and Ronald H. Nygard III, Ironwood; three great-grandchildren, Ariana, Kaylee and Aaron; four brothers, Gerald (Myong), Fayetteville, N.C., Gustave (Doris), Montello, Wis., Dana (Bonnie), Ft Myers, Fla., and John (Joanne), Green Bay, Wis.; six sisters, Dorothy DiGiorgio, Hurley, Eileen Stempihar, Wakefield, Mildred (Richard) Giovannini, Menomonee Falls, Wis., Sonja (Gerald) Mattick, Ft. Myers, Mary Vern (Frank) Genisot, Ironwood Township, and Kathy (James) Barry, Las Vegas, Nev.; brother-and-sisters-in-law, Dave and Marion Eplett, Ironwood Township, and Mary Jo Eplett, Ironwood; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Ron was preceded in death by a brother, Michael "Mickey", in 1970; a brother in childhood; and a sister in infancy. In accordance with Ron's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Revs. Darryl Pepin and Jean Rencontre, co-officiating. Committal services and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood Luncheon will be served in the Wesley United Methodist Church fellowship hall immediately upon return from the cemetery.
