Obituary

Roland W. "Rollie" Mattson, 68, of 1020 Rudberg Dr., Hurley, died Monday, April 9, 2007, in Ironwood. He was born April 23, 1938, in Erwin Township, Ironwood, son of Mary (Laitila) Richter and the late Earl Mattson, attended the K.P. Silberg Grade School in Erwin Township, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School. He then entered and served in the U.S. Air Force for six years at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. and in Japan. Following his honorable discharge, Rollie returned to Ironwood where he was employed as a mechanic and service manager at Point Motor Sales and Gotta Motors for 17 1/2 years. He owned and operated his own repair shop in Yale Location, Bessemer, for 4 years, worked as a mechanic at Hastings Ford in Hastings, Minn. for 5 years, and retired as a correctional officer for the Dakota County Sheriff's Dept. in Hastings in 2000, moving to Hurley in 2002. Rollie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bessemer, and Mercer-Manitowish Waters American Legion Post No. 424. His hobby was working difficult crossword puzzles, and he drove stock cars in Ironwood in his younger years. He especially enjoyed travelling extensively throughout the country with his wife and grandchildren, and was a snowbird for the past five winters. On Jan. 24, 1959, he was married to the former Gail F. Juntunen of Bessemer at the First Presbyterian Church in Bessemer. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Darrell (Kim), Red Wing, Minn., and daughter, Lynne (Rick) Stenroos, Ironwood; eight grandchildren, Leander Stenroos, Yellowstone National Park, Wyo., Heather (Benji) Orth, Medford, Wis., Melissa Mattson, Red Wing, Gregory Stenroos, Yellowstone National Park, Candice Stenroos, Ironwood, and Shannon, Benjamin, and Zachary Johnson, all of Red Wing; one great-granddaughter, Jaylyn Orth; his mother, Mary Richter, Ironwood; two sisters, Dolores "Dolly" (Rev. H. LeRoy) Peterson, Ironwood, and Joyce O'Krongly, Milwaukee; brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Bernadette "Sue" Mattson, Ironwood, Bob and Arlene Juntunen, Hernando, Fla., Paul and Dawn Erickson and Carmen and Don Mussatti, all of Bessemer, and Roseanne and Bill Ferrari, Savannah, Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his father, Rollie was preceded in death by his brother, Richard A. "Dick" Mattson, March 13, 2006. In accordance with Roll ie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 14, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Bessemer, with Dr. Jack Fashbaugh, pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the combined Ironwood and Bessemer American Legion Honor Guard. A luncheon reception will follow at Manny's in Ironwood.
