Roland "Jim" Anderson, 81, of
Kivi Tia Rd., Kimball, died peacefully Monday, June 11, 2012, in his home,
surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Ironwood, Mich.,
son of the late Wayne and Mary (Raymond) Anderson, and graduated from Luther L.
Wright High School in 1949. He then entered the U.S. Navy and served two tours
of duty aboard the USS Missouri and USS Lake Champlain during the Korean
Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1953. Following his discharge, Jim came to Kimball
and worked in the Newport Mine in Ironwood until the mine closed. He retired
from Lakehead Pipeline after 30 years of service in 1992. Jim was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in
Ironwood, Mercier-Kero American Legion Post 371 of Saxon, the Kimball Men's
Club, and an honorary member of the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department. He
enjoyed fishing, hobby farming and raising animals, and loved dancing, making
wood, and erecting birdhouses. He was also an avid Milwaukee Brewers and Green
Bay Packers fan. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting
activities. A quiet, soft-spoken, and kind-hearted man, he will be deeply
missed. On Oct. 6, 1951, Jim was united in marriage to
Helmi Kivi at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jimmy (Becky),
Juneau, Alaska, and Dan (Theresa), Erwin Township, Ironwood; two daughters, Lee
Anderson, Ironwood, and Jill (Gerry) Fesnick, Kimball; nine grandchildren, Tyler
Anderson, Juneau, Jolene (John) Mason, Beaver Dam, Andy Zaleski (Courtney),
Kimball, Jesse James Zaleski (Molly), Montreal, Benjamin Roland Zaleski (Robin),
Winchester, Julie Jane Zaleski (Matt), Phoenix, Ariz., Allyssa Anderson,
Scottsdale, Ariz., and Vanessa and Mitchell Anderson, both of Ironwood; seven
great-grandchildren, Taylor Armata, Brianna, Braxton and Tristin Zaleski, Jayden
and Rylan Zaleski, and Parker Jeske; two sisters, Marcella Verbovanec, Ironwood,
and LaVerne Keagy, Wakefield, Mich.; numerous nieces and
nephews; sisters-in-law, Geri Anderson, Mellen, and Helen Lantta and Helvie
Pelkola, both of Kimball; and very special friends, his dog, R.J., and cat,
Mow. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by
three brothers, Raymond, Donald and Gordon. Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has
taken place. A memorial service will be held Monday, June
18, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick
Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. William Jacobson,
pastor of All Saints Lutheran Church in Wakefield, officiating. Full military rites will follow, accorded by
the Mercier-Kero American Legion Post 371 Honor Guard. Luncheon will be served at Tacconelli's in
downtown Ironwood immediately upon conclusion of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Regional
