Obituary

Robert J. "Jim" Tourville, 79, of 312 E. Longyear St., Bessemer, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Tomah, Wis., with his wife by his side, following a lengthy illness. Jim was born Feb. 21, 1930, in Houghton, son of the late Emery and Florence (Kroll) Tourville, attended St. Ignatius Grade School there, and graduated from Houghton High School. He then attended Michigan Tech for two years. Jim served in the U.S. Navy for four years, and in the U.S. Army for 22 years, retiring as a chief warrant officer in 1972. He served two tours of duty in Korea and one tour of duty in Vietnam, and commanded Vulcan/Nike missile units in Europe. He was a member of Bessemer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3673 and a lifetime member of Bessemer American Legion Post 27. He was married to the former Donna E. Bochek on May 2, 1953 in Waukegan, Ill. She survives. Also surviving are five sons, Marc (Camille), Bessemer, Scott ( partner Julie Manning), Love's Park, Ill., Todd, Bessemer, Dale (Melissa), Ashland, Wis., and Joel (fiancee Dixie Helberg), Bessemer; a daughter, Anne Marie (Michael) Thurston, San Diego, Calif.; ten grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Carmen), Green Bay, Wis.; three sisters, Nina (John) McCall, Hanover, NH, Helen Thomas, Baxter, Minn., and Keitha Trudgeon, Bessemer; a step-brother, Joe (Betty) Martell, Bessemer; two sisters-in-law, Sally Tourville, Bessemer, and Joyce Berns, Pewaukee, Wis.; two brothers-in-law, Robert Bochek, Phoenix, Az., and Eugene (Patricia) Bochek, Franksville, Wis.; an uncle and aunt, Earl and Ethel Kroll, Ironton, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Ronald; a sister, Aileen Davenport; and a step-sister, Theresa. Out of respect for Jim's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 17, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Raymond Moncher, celebrant. Full military rites will be accorded by the combined Bessemer American Legion Post 27 and VFW Post 3673 Honor Guard. A luncheon reception will follow in the parish hall.
