Robert G. "Bob" Miller, 96, of
Mercer, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at home, surrounded by his loving
family. He was born Jan. 14, 1916, in Chicago,
Ill., son of the late Fred and Marie (Rowinski) Miller of Maywood, Ill., and
attended St. Eulalia Grade School and Proviso East High School in Maywood. In
1936, he joined the Cincinnati Reds and played in their minor league
baseball program for three years. He then worked for Commonwealth Edison Utility
Co. until moving to Mercer in 1955. On April 15, 1944, he married the former
Myrtle "Myrt" Goettsche in Maywood. Bob and Myrt became the owners of Club 51 in
Mercer in 1955 and served the Northwoods for 36 years. They shared many
wonderful years with their customers and Teepee Tribe members. During this time,
Bob served on the Iron County Board of Supervisors, the Law Enforcement
committee, and the Highway Department. He was a member of the Mercer Town Board,
a 55-year member of the Mercer Lions Club, and belonged to St. Isaac Jogues
Catholic Church in Mercer. Myrt and Bob retired in 1990 to their home on
Blue Gill Lake, where Bob enjoyed fishing. He is survived by his wife, Myrt, of 68 years;
daughters, Rita Klotter (Larry Jokipii) and Linda Miller (Donald) Smith, both of
Mercer; grandson, Robert (Rebecca) Klotter, Antioch, Ill.; three
great-grandchildren, Austin, Taylor and Hunter; several nieces and nephews; and
his faithful companion, his dog Boomer. Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death
by two brothers, Albert and William. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Isaac
Jogues Catholic Church in Mercer, with the Rev. Lourdu Mandapati,
celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in
the Mercer Cemetery. Me morial
