Robert A. "Bob" Kostopolus, 82, of 494 N. Curry St., Ironwood, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, in Ironwood, surrounded by his loving family, following a lengthy illness. Bob was born Dec. 4, 1926, in Ironwood, son of the late George and Florence (Frederick) May Kostopolus, attended local schools, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1944. He entered the U.S. Navy on Oct. 24, 1944, serving during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations in French Morocco and Guam, and on the fighting ship, the USS Elokomin. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 19, 1949. Bob owned and operated Bob's T.V., first in downtown Ironwood and then on Lake Street, for 25 years, retiring in June 1991. An avid bowler, he bowled in area leagues for many years and was among the top bowlers on the Range, having rolled two 700 series at the age of 75. He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood and Hurley American Legion Post 58, and was a past member of Wakefield VFW Post 9084. On June 10, 1957, he was married to Joan Marie Mizgala at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ironwood, by the late Rev. Ambrose Matejik. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Robert D., Higgins Lake, Mich., and William (Rebecca), Appleton, Wis.; three daughters, Chris Ann Bressette, Ironwood, Corinne Murphy, Appleton, and Gail (Charles) Kellas, Ironwood; 16 grandchildren, to include a very close granddaughter, Angela (John) MacLeod, of Ironwood; three great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Eugene (Mae) May, Sutherland, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and Joe Riggs, of Tucson, Ariz. Bob will be deeply missed by his family and loved ones. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, George, Constance and William Kostopolus; a half-sister, Helen Merrins; and a sister-in-law, Judith Breen, in 1985. Private family services will be held, with cremation to follow. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
