Robert J. "Bob" Byrns, 77, of
Hurley, went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, in
Ironwood, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Sept. 16, 1934, in Ironwood, son
of the late William and Alma (Bergman) Byrns, attended St. Ambrose Grade and
High School, and graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley in 1952. While
in high school, he excelled in basketball and baseball. He then attended Wayne
State University in Detroit on a basketball scholarship, but returned to Hurley
to help take care of his ailing father. Bob was employed by Gust Giancola Masonry in
Hurley for several years. He then began his career with the City of Hurley in
the sanitation department and eventually was appointed street
superintendent, retiring in June of 1990 after 33 1/2 years of
dedicated service. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Hurley and the Hurley Quarterback Club, and was inducted into the Hurley
Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He also umpired for Hurley Area Little League
Baseball for many years, and played recreational baseball and basketball in
Hurley city leagues. He also donated to the St. Vincent De Paul Society and
other area charities for many years. On July 6, 1957, he married the former Marilyn
A. Korpi at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. She preceded him in death on
Nov. 1, 2005. Surviving are six children, Debi (Gene)
Synkelma, Eugene, Ore., Kathleen Byrns, Hurley, Barbara (Jim) Wilman, Ironwood,
William (Connie) Byrns, Alaska, Patricia (Greg) Paavola, Marquette, and Elizabeth
(Frank) Redwing, Front Royal, Va.; 13 grandchildren, to include a special
grandson, Joseph (Mary) Byrns, Superior, Wis.; 17 great-grandchildren; a
brother, Patrick, Evansville, Wis.; a sister, Sue Byrns, Ironwood; numerous
nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Delores Byrns, Germantown, Wis., Verna
Leinonen, Covington, Shirley (Merle) Conrad, Grand Rapids, and Betty Korpi,
L'Anse. Besides his parents and wife, Bob was preceded
in death by two sons, Robert Joseph and Robert John Jr.; a brother, William; and
sister, Anne Novak. Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has
taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Friday, July 27, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM,
celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in
St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley. Luncheon will be served in the parish hall
