Richard C. "Dick" Vardon, 80, of 337 W. Ash
St., Ironwood, died peacefully early Saturday morning, Oct. 3, 2009, surrounded
by his loving family, in his home. He was born April 25, 1929, in Munising, son
of the late Claude and Inez (Carrier) Vardon, attended grade school there, and
graduated from Baraga High School in 1947. He worked at the Cramm and Crocker Sawmill in
the Munising area prior to moving to Ironwood, where he was employed at the
Roddis Lumber Co. for several years. He also tended bar at Mac's Bar in Hurley
and assisted Norbert "Mac" Markowski in his vending business for many years, and
was employed with the City of Ironwood until his retirement. Dick was a member of Our Lady of Peace
Catholic Church in Ironwood and the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where
he helped in the remodeling of the church basement and sang in the church choir.
His hobbies included woodworking, building model trucks, cars and boats,
furniture refinishing and water color painting. He enjoyed caring for his
children's pets when they were away, and took delight in agitating his exotic
birds, his Cockatiels. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and taking them
fishing. Dick was a wonderful kind, caring, and gentle husband, father,
grandfather and brother, and will be deeply missed. On May 17, 1958, he was married to the former Charlotte J. Murra at Holy Trinity
Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. Ambrose Matejik. She
survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Juli
(Charlie) Anderson, and Geri (Alan) Morrison, both of Ironwood; three
grandchildren, Gabrielle "Gabby" and Blayne Anderson, both of Ironwood, and
Andrew Morrison, Golden, Colo.; two brothers, Keith, Ironwood, and Michael
(Helen), Clarkston; a sister, Mary Therese (Bob) Rasmussen, Iron Mountain;
numerous nieces and nephews; and brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Bernard Murra,
Rhinelander, Wis., William Murra, Iron Mountain, Eugene Murra,
Ironwood, Jim and Marilyn Murra, Hurley, Wis., and Elizabeth
and Frank Vukusich, Anvil Location, Bessemer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by two sisters, Ann Catherine in childhood and Maureen McQuiggan. In accordance with Dick's wishes, cremation
has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Friday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood,
with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the St.
Joseph Family Room at the church. Inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery,
Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call in the St.
Joseph Family Room at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may
be made to the Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student Program or the St. Vincent
