Obituary

Richard's Obituary       Richard L. "Dick" Garbe, 70, of 1535W Co. Rd. J, Mercer, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, in his home, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy illness.      He was born in Oshkosh , Wis. on Feb. 4, 1939 , son of the late Willard and Elaine (Genal) Garbe.   He graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1956 and joined the US Marine Corps later that year. He moved to Mercer in 1968.       An avid sportsman, Dick's passion for hunting and fishing included guiding countless walleye fishing trips on the Flambeau Flowage as well as decades of deer hunts in northern Wisconsin      A lifelong entrepreneur, Dick started and operated numerous businesses including The Beachcomber in Oshkosh ,  The Century Elm Supper Club in Larson , WI , and the Anchor Inn and Circle Lily Supper Clubs , Timberjack Tree Service, Custom Tree Service and The Warehouse, all in Mercer..     He was married to the former Laurel Peter Bos on Dec. 12, 1981.Together they started and operated The Warehouse in Mercer. Laurel survives.      Also surviving are a sister, Sandra Garbe; a daughter, Karrie (Steve) Benda; and   2 stepchildren, Mark (Darlene) Bos and Victoria (Keith) Brunell.   Richard was grandfather to 10 grandchildren.        Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. , at the Mercer United Methodist Church in Mercer, with the Rev. Larry Olson officiating.      Committal and interment will follow in the Mercer Cemetery , where a flag presentation ceremony will be accorded by Mercer veterans.      Luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall immediately upon return from the cemetery.      Relatives and friends may call at the church from 4 to 6:30 p.m.  on Thursday, and again from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday.      Pallbearers will be Karl Anderson, Doug Chidley, Bill Altman and Larry Jokipii.      Memorial contributions may be made to Dr. Kate Hospice, 1571N Highway 51, Woodruff , Wis. 54568 .      To view Dick's obituary online, sign the guestbook and express condolences, visit mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ironwood.
