Regina M. Kostelnik, 90, of
Ironwood, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation,
and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood. The former Regina M. Kolesar was born March
22, 1922, in Ironwood, and grew up in a bustling house during the Depression.
She attended Norrie Grade School and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School
in 1940. She then trained to become a telephone operator and supervisor and
worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. in the early 1940s. On May 26, 1945, she was united in marriage to
Steve Kostelnik, a Marine who served in the Pacific during World War II, at Holy
Trinity Catholic Church in Ironwood, by the late Rev. Carl Petranek. They moved
to Elmhurst, Ill. and then to Kenosha, Wis., where Regina owned and operated
Kostelnik's Food Shop and Steve operated Steve's Automotive Service for 17
years while raising three sons. They then returned to Ironwood in 1976,
renovated Regina's mother's house, and owned and operated Steve's Standard
Service where Regina worked as part-time bookkeeper, retiring in 1985. Steve
preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1994. Regina was a member of Our Lady of Peace
Catholic Church in Ironwood and the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She
enjoyed traveling, from Hawaii to Europe and across the U.S. She took pride in
holding dinner parties and loved to arrange theme parties for wedding
anniversaries and family reunions. She was an excellent seamstress, and
also kept busy with needle work and crafts. She lovingly cared for both her
mother and mother-in-law during their last years. Surviving are three sons, Stephen II (Annette),
Vernon Hills, Ill., Paul, Ironwood, and Dale (Maureen), Milwaukee; a grandson,
Robert Stephen Kostelnik, Milwaukee; four brothers, Michael Kolesar, Sacramento,
Calif., John Kolesar, Chula Vista, Calif., and Clem and Bernard "Bobo" Kolesar,
both of Ironwood; numerous nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, James Soraruf,
Ypsilanti; and sister-in-law, Betty Kolesar, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. Besides her parents and husband, Regina was
preceded in death by brothers, John and Steven Kolesar in infancy, and Paul,
Frank and Tony Kolesar; and sisters, twins Maria and Eva Kolesar and Mary
Kolesar in infancy, Jule Schafer, Cecelia Soraruf, Sister Michaelene Kolesar and
Veronica Niksich. Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has
taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Monday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation in the St. Joseph Family
Room at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev.
Allan J. Mayotte, celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in
Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Lunch will be served in the parish hall
immediately upon return from the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
the Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student Program, 108 S. Marquette St., Ironwood,
