Phillip C. Olson,
68, of N11650 Vanderhagen Rd., Ironwood Township, died Sunday, June 27, 2010, in
his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with
cancer. He was born Aug. 16, 1941, in Chicago, son of
the late Dudley and Mary (Calore) Olson, attended Ironwood schools, and
graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1959. He then served in the U.S.
Air Force stateside and in Okinawa from 1961-1965. Following his honorable discharge, Phil was
employed as a pipefitter and steamfitter for Union Local 806, Plumbers and
Pipefitters, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Ironwood American Legion
Post 5, and a life member of Northland Chapter, Disabled American Veterans No.
66. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, and working in his
yard. On Feb. 28, 1970, he was married to the former
Shirley Laflin Berlin at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood by the Rev. Wilho
Puotinen. Shirley survives. Also surviving are four sons, Thomas Berlin,
Oviedo, Fla., David (Jolene) Berlin, Woodland Park, Colo., Christopher Olson,
Rogers, Minn., and Sean Olson, Ironwood; three grandchildren, Sofia and Graciana
Berlin, Oviedo, and Sara Olson, Ironwood; one great-grandson, Michael Thomas
Berlin; a brother, John (Martha), Wakefield; three sisters, Gail (Denis) Peters
and Nancy Olson, both of West Allis, Wis., and Colleen (Stein) Simonsen,
Pocatello, Idaho; a brother-in-law, Richard Laflin, Ypsilanti, and a
sister-in-law, Joan (Lloyd) Ying, Canton. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death
by an infant son James. Out of respect for Phil's wishes, cremation
has taken place. A memorial service will be held Wednesday,
June 30, at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in
Ironwood, with the Rev. Chips Paulson officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the
Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow at Tacconelli's in
downtown Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral
