Peter P. Vernetti, 81, of 207 7th Ave. No., Hurley, died Thursday, July 1, 2010,
at Mellen Manor Nursing Home in Mellen.
He
was born March 22, 1929, in Hurley, son of the late Natale and Mary (Innanti)
Vernetti, attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School, and graduated from Lincoln
High School in Hurley in 1947. He then served two years in the U.S. Army of
Occupation in Germany.
Following his honorable discharge, Pete returned to Hurley and worked in the
Cary Mine until it closed, then at White Pine Copper Co. for many years,
retiring in 1991.
He
was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, a life member of Iron
County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1580, and was an avid Green Bay Packers and
Milwaukee Brewers fan. He enjoyed walking his golden retrievers, Brandy and
Jessie, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
On
May 14, 1955, he was married to the former Marguerite A. Lutz at St. Ambrose
Catholic Church in Ironwood, Mich. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, James, Seattle, Wash., William (Catherine),
Ironwood Township, and Joseph (Beth Smith), St. Joseph, Mo.; a daughter, Mary
(Jeff) Ollikainen, Montreal; eight grandchildren, Jason (Danielle) Vernetti, St.
Paul, Minn., Andrea Soffa, San Diego, Calif., Rachelle Soffa, Hurley, Justin
Soffa, Ironwood, Jonathan Soffa, Green Bay, Nicholas Vernetti, Hurley, Jacob
Vernetti, St. Joseph, and Jennifer (Jesse) Bufkin, the Netherlands; three
great-grandchildren, Isaiah Vernetti, Nico Vernetti, and Rayna Walker; four
brothers, Dominic, Tampa Bay, Fla., John (Sue), Belvedere, Ill., Donald,
Bessemer, Mich., and Robert, Minneapolis, Minn.; four sisters, Patti Serago,
Eveleth, Minn., Sharon (Charlie) Colassaco, Ironwood, Mary Lee Cronkright,
Saginaw, Mich., and Corinne (Fred) Alexandroni, Ironwood; a brother-in-law,
James Lutz, Charlevoix, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces
and grand nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Isabelle in
infancy, Domenica Vernetti, and Violet Leccia. Out of respect for Pete's
wishes, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated Friday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Hurley, with the Rev. Msgr. Jed Patrick, celebrant. Rite of
Committal will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley, where full military
honors will be accorded by the combined Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron
Co. VFW Post 1580 Honor Guard.
Inurnment will follow.
Luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the
cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept.
10.
