Obituary

Longtime Hurley resident Pauline "Polly" Alleva, 95, of 308 Fifth Avenue North, Hurley, entered Eternal Life and went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with her loving family by her side Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, in Ironwood. The former Pauline Antoinette Dedo was born April 28, 1912, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Cestkowski) Dedo, attended A.L. Norrie Grade School, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1930. She also attended Gogebic Community College. She was employed as a cashier and bookkeeper for the S.S. Kresge Co. in downtown Ironwood for seventeen years, 1929-1946 as a floor walker/supervisor, and 1941-1946 as office auditor. She was an Avon representative for ten years, worked in assembly at Simpson Electric Co. in Mercer for four years, 1966-1969, at Paul's Store in Hurley as a sales clerk for seven years, 1969-1975, and at the Ben Franklin Store in Hurley for ten years, 1977-1986, in the fabric and crafts department. Polly served on the Hurley City Council for four terms from 1973-1982 and finished her husband Joseph's term in 1973. She was a den mother for Cub Scout Troop 219 for three years, president of the Girls Sodality of St. Michael's Church in Ironwood, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church for over seventy years and a member of St. Mary's Choir, and a member of the Blue Army, Salesian Missions, Hurley Women's Club Homemakers, and Iron County Senior Citizens. She also hostessed at the Liberty Bell Chalet and was a Caring Caregiver for the 50 Plus Caregivers Program for two years. Polly devoted her life to her husband and family. She was an excellent homemaker. She was a very generous and giving woman, kind and loving and a friend to all. Polly possessed many talents including cooking and baking, knitting, sewing, crocheting, tole painting, oil painting and drawing. She loved working in her perennial garden and had a love for birds and canaries. Polly was very witty and had a great sense of humor. Her favorite pastime was reading. Everybody who knew Polly loved her. She will be greatly missed. On June 13, 1938, she was married to Joseph F. Alleva at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. Charles Szygula. Joseph preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1973. Surviving are a daughter, Andrea Mary Alleva, Hurley; four sons, James (Carol), Anchorage, Alaska, John (Heidi), Anchorage, Robert (JoEllen), Red Wing, Minn., and Ronald (Annette), Anchorage; 17 grandchildren, Gina Matuska, James Alleva, Lisa Siler, Scot Alleva, Andre and Matthew (Stefani) Alleva, Lisa (Jeff) Evanoff, Johnny (Mary) Alleva and Kristie Alleva, Jenna, Josie and Rose Alleva, and Jacques, Jesse, Aaron, Jasmine and Jordan Alleva; 13 great-grandchildren, Jessica and Mattheau Osgood, Kyle Matuska, Bradon, Audrianna, Carrissa and Dalton Alleva, McKinley and Alyeska Siler, Nathan Alleva, Brissa and Sylvia Alleva, and Olivia Evanoff; and her sister, Sr. Elizabeth Dedo (Sister of St. Joseph, Third Order of St. Frances), Kaukauna. Polly also leaves behind her dog, "Percy". Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Stanley Borek; an infant son, Joseph Andrew; two sisters, Josephine Parrish and Irene Elliott; and three brothers, Frank, John, and Joe Dedo. A Celebration of Polly's life and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael T. Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal will be held at the church, with luncheon to be served in the parish hall immediately following. Spring burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until Mass time at the church on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Polly's sons, James, John, Robert and Ronald Alleva.
