Patricia M. Dennis, 85, of Saxon,
died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, in Ashland. She was born July 10, 1923, in Winchester,
Wis., daughter of the late Henry "Jake" and Mabel (Lee) Van Ouwerkerk,
and graduated from Saxon High School in 1941. Pat entered the U.S. Army in 1944, serving
stateside during World War II in the Women's Army Corps at Ft. Patrick Henry in
Norfolk, Va. and as a welder at a shipyard in Portland, Ore. After being honorably dishcharged in 1946, she
was united in marriage to Willard J. Dennis on Oct. 9, 1946 in Newton, Ill. He
preceded her in death on June 10, 2004. Pat was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church
in Saxon and Mercier-Kero American Legion Post 371. Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting,
playing cards, singing, bird watching, baking, reading and doing crossword
puzzles. Pat was very proud of the fact that all
15 of her children graduated from high school. She loved her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren very much and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her 15 children, David,
Saxon, Cathleen (Robert) Kuehl, Marshfield, Wallace (Rosemarie), Saxon, Edward
(Margie), Green Bay, Gene (Elaine), Sturgeon Bay, Joseph (Barbara),
Hurley, Dolores (Peter) Strand, Bowling Brook, Ill., Daniel (Nancy), Madison,
Annette (Richard) Brown, Superior, LeeAnne (Gordon) Runquist, Superior, John
(Diane), Saxon, Irene (Norman) Buntrock, Wittenberg, Lori Dennis (Bill Byers),
Duluth, Minn., Donna (Steve) Galush, Bloomington, Minn., and Alan, of Bessemer,
Mich.; 42 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; a brother, James (Elaine)
Van Ouwerkerk, Minong; half-brothers, Clayton and Michael Cassidy, both of
Wisconsin; and a half-sister, Lorenz Cassidy, of Arkansas. Besides her parents
and husband Willard, Pat was preceded in death by 3 grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn
Dennis, Rebecca Ann Dennis and Norman William Buntrock III; a brother, Robert
Van Ouwerkerk; half-brothers, William, Robert, Ronald, Loren and David Cassidy;
and a half-sister, Loraine Elmer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Wednesday, July 15, at 11 a.m., at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Saxon, with the
Rev. Kevin Gordon, celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow
in Lakeview Cemetery, Saxon, where full military rites will be accorded by the
Mercier-Kero American Legion Post 371 Honor Guard. Lunch will be served in the Saxon Community
Center immediately upon return from the cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 9 to 11
a.m. on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Joshua, Christopher, James,
Gene and Cody Dennis, Michael Kuehl, Kyle Buntrock, Derek Strand and Travis
