Obituary

Nancy M. Caruso, 93, of Hurley, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, in Hurley. She was born May 19, 1914, in Hibbing, Minn., the daughter of the late Orazio and Agatha (Spera) Caruso. The family moved to Hurley in 1927, where they lived thereafter at 104 Iron St. Nancy graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley in 1932, and from Gogebic Community College after a two year attendance, in 1934. She then attended the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. and graduated in 1936. She later earned fourteen credits from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Nancy was employed as a social worker for the City of Hurley Relief Department, for the Dane County Pension Department in Madison, for the State Division of Children and Youth, Ashland, and for the Iron County Department of Social Services, Hurley, serving as director of the Department for three years. In March 1973, Miss Caruso received special recognition for her work with older citizens from Loren J. Close, special service specialist for the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services, and from Martin J. Schreiber, Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin. In a letter to Miss Caruso Schreiber said "I want to extend my personal commendation to you for a job well done. Because of your effort some fourteen older citizens have avoided inappropriate placement in nursing homes, and will continue to live with dignity and independence in their own homes or the home of relatives." In addiition to her social service work, Nancy was involved in the organization of the Iron County Easter Seal Society in Hurley, and the AARP Gogebic County Chapter. She was the leader of the Hurley Youth Council for six years, an organization of adolescents involved in community projects, and was also a Girl Scout leader for the St. Mary's School Troop for five years. Memberships include the Iron County and Gogebic County Historical Museums, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley and its' Council of Catholic Women, Gogebic Chapter of Paisano Clubs, Grand View Hospital Auxiliary, and the Ironwood Business and Professional Women's Club. She had been a member of the Range Art Council, Gogebic Country Club, and Eagle Bluff Golf Club. In her lifetime, Nancy had enjoyed playing tennis and golf, swimming, cross country skiing, bridge playing, and acrylic and water color painting. She enjoyed collecting dolls in her national and international travels, and also collected old and rare books. In retirement she enjoyed bird feeding and perennial flower gardening, as well as her volunteer work at the Grand View Hospital, Gogebic Council for the Arts, Ironwood Theatre, and Eagle Bluff Golf Club. In recent years, she was also involved in learning how to use a computer. Nancy is survived by numerous cousins and friends, including her longtime caregiver, Irene (Harold) Vuorenmaa of Ironwood; two very close special friends, Paul Sturgul of Hurley and Cynthia Chartier of Montreal; and foster children in Ecuador, the Phillipines, and Haiti. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley. Luncheon will be served at the Iron Nugget in downtown Hurley immediately upon return from the cemetery. Friends may call at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Dean Gustafson, John Pierpont, Dale Wicklund, Brian Tarro, George Wesa, and Carl Kinnunen.
