Obituary

Michael Frank Kowaleski, 79, of Mercer, went to be with his Lord on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital.

Michael was born on March 3, 1947, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Edward and Wanda (Skonieczny) Kowaleski. Following high school, he attended Milwaukee Area Technical College. He was united in marriage with Cheryl Hawkinson on July 22, 1972, in Beaver Dam, and together they shared 54 years of marriage.

Music was Michael's lifelong passion. He dedicated 37 years to the Wausau Conservatory of Music, where he inspired countless students as a music instructor and continued teaching until the time of his passing. Throughout his career, Michael performed with numerous bands, including The Roadrunners, who opened for the Rolling Stones. He also performed as a backup musician for the Rolling Stones and shared the stage with artists including The Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, Del Shannon, and The Tokens. His love of music touched the lives of many and remained a defining part of who he was.

In addition to music, Michael enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mercer, where he served as an elder.

Michael will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Cheryl; three children, Michael Kowaleski Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona, Amanda (Brandon) Bennett of Mayer, Arizona, and Mitchell (Punahele) Kowaleski of Maui, Hawaii; two granddaughters, Evey and Ella Bennett; his brother, Edward (Joann) Kowaleski of Arbor Vitae; and two brothers-in-law, John (Susie) Hawkinson and Dale (Jackie) Hawkinson. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, his many music students, other relatives, and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation for Mike will be held on Saturday, October 3rd from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Mercer.
