MaryEllen Usitalo, 84, of
Ironwood, died peacefully Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Aspirus Grand View
Hospital in Ironwood, following a lengthy illness. The former MaryEllen Jelich was born Jan. 26,
1928, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Jelich) Jelich,
attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in
1946. She was employed as a sales clerk at
McClellan's in downtown Ironwood for 30 years, retiring in 1987. MaryEllen was a member of Our Lady of Peace
Catholic Church in Ironwood and the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and
belonged to the Croatian Fraternal Union of America. An avid bowler and golfer,
she bowled in Hurley and Ironwood leagues and was a member of Eagle Bluff Golf
Club in Hurley, where she was former Woman's League champion. She loved cooking
for her children and grandchildren. On June 26, 1954, she was married to Robert W.
Usitalo at Holy Trinity Church by the late Rev. Ambrose Matejik. Bob preceded
her in death on March 24, 1994. Surviving are three sons, Robert (Karen),
Kingsford, Dave, Ironwood, and Jim (Joan), Ironwood Township; a daughter, Jann
Usitalo, Ironwood; four grandchildren, Kim and Kelly Usitalo, Ashley Usitalo
(Tony Stella), and Sarah Usitalo (Kyle Smith); one great-grandson, Liam Smith; a
sister, Kathleen (Joseph) Kafczynski, Ironwood Township; a sister-in-law, Mayme
Usitalo, Bessemer Township; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by two sisters, Anna in infancy, and Betty Dragoo;
and brothers-in-law, Raymond Usitalo and Earl Dragoo. Out of respect for MaryEllen's wishes,
cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday,
March 24, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick
Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin
officiating. Rite of Committal will follow. Private interment will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Ironwood. Condolences may be given to MaryEllen's family
