Mary J. Semenak, 97, a longtime
Ironwood resident, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, in Hurley, surrounded by her
loving family. The former Mary Uremovich was born March 19,
1914, in Port Arthur, Canada, daughter of the late Steve and Helen (Pocronich)
Uremovich, and came to the United States at the age of two. Following the death
of her father when she was seven, Mary was raised by her mother and step-father,
Joseph Kolak. She attended Newport Grade School and Luther L. Wright High School
in Ironwood. Mary worked as a housekeeper/nanny for various
prominent families in Ironwood and Hurley, and was employed as a salad girl at
the Curry Hotel in downtown Ironwood, as a nurse's aid at Josephson Nursing
Home, and in fishing rod assembly at the Kodiak Corp. in Ironwood. She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic
Church in Ironwood and the former Holy Trinity Catholic Church and its Altar
Society. She was devoted to her family and loved to cook for them, and wrote
poems for family and friends. She loved to recite religion to her family, and
also loved to crochet to make nice things for family and friends. As Mary stated
to us, "We will all truly miss her". And we all will. Mary married John Saippa in 1935 at Holy
Trinity Catholic Church. He preceded her in death in 1937. She married Joseph Stefani in 1940 at Holy
Trinity. He preceded her in death in June of 1944. She then married Andrew A. Semenak in 1946,
also at Holy Trinity. He preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1981. Surviving are a son, Joseph (Patti) Stefani,
Ramsay, Mich.; three daughters, Bonnie (Tom) Chiantello, Osceola, Ind., Nancy
(Bruce) Pikka, Ironwood, and Andrea (Vince) Ursini, Clinton Township, Mich.; a
daughter-in-law, Jeanne Saippa, Kimball; 13 grandchildren, Rick (Sue) Saippa,
Debbie (Pat) Rady, David Saippa, Diana (Tim) Dayney, Wendy (Rick) Niemi, Maria
Chiantello, Anita (John) Tuccillo, John (Jerri), Ben (Maria), and Kristin Sokol,
and Andy (Tena), Joey and Stacey Ursini; 16 great-grandchildren; eight
great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mandy Wedge, Kiel, Wis., and Allie (Ben)
Vronch, Ironwood; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husbands, Mary was
preceded in death by a son, John "Mitch" Saippa Jr., on Sept. 13,
2002; grandson, Daniel Ursini, at birth; brothers, Joseph Uremovich, and John
and George Kolak; and sisters, Kathryn Nasi, Ann Cardini, Mary Uremovich in
infancy, and Helen Thorin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, at Our Lady of
Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, preceded by visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
in the St. Joseph Family Room, with the Rev. Darryl J. Pepin,
celebrant. Rite of Committal will take place in the St
Joseph Family Room at the church, with luncheon to follow in the parish
hall. Spring burial will be in Riverside Cemetery,
Ironwood. Pallbearers will be Johnnie and Ben Sokol,
Ricky and David Saippa, and Stacey and Andy Ursini. Online condolences can be given to Mary's
