Obituary

Mary K. Olson, 91, of 45 Aurora Location, Ironwood, died unexpectedly Thursday evening, May 3, 2007, in Ironwood. The former Mary Calore was born May 26, 1915, in Chicago, daughter of the late Isadore and Santa (Contin) Calore. She attended grade school in Montreal, Wis., and graduated from Lincoln High School in Hurley in 1933. She then was employed as a waitress at the Lakeview Inn in Wakefield and in area resorts. She was married to Dudley R. Olson on May 29, 1939, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Montreal, by the Rev. Edward Falicki. Dudley preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1997. Mary was dedicated to her family. Everyone came to her home to visit and share. She loved to cook and gave this gift to her family. She canned applesauce using apples from her trees, and taught all of her family how to pick and prepare mushrooms, wild berries and dandelions. She loved the outdoors where she and her husband went rock hounding and sold their treasures at flea markets. She was a very hard worker who always took pride in her appearance and kept an immaculate house, where she lived by herself until God took her. Mary was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood. She learned how to knit in later years when she gave her scarves away. She was a very nurturing, caring, loving mother and grandmother. Surviving are two sons, Phillip (Shirley), Ironwood Township, and John (Martha), Wakefield; three daughters, Gail (Denis) Peters and Nancy Olson, both of West Allis, Wis., and Colleen (Stein) Simonsen, Pocatello, Idaho; nine grandchildren, Susan McHugh, West Bend, Wis., Sandra (Steven) Zach, Wauwatosa, Wis., Sheryl (Tim) Hall, Verona, Wis., Tom Berlin, Oviedo, Fla., David (Jolene) Berlin, Woodland Park, Colo., Christopher Olson, Rogers, Minn., Sean (Cathy) Olson, Zion, Ill., Todd Beloy, New Brighton, Minn., and Jean (Peter) Bobgan, Maple Grove, Minn.; nine great-grandchildren, Peter and Matthew McHugh, Camden Zach, Ella Hall, Sofie and Gracieanna Berlin, and Gabrielle, Nicholas, and Amanda Bobgan; and two sisters, Elizabeth (Earl) Jakeway, Aurora, Minn., and Margaret Frankovic, Sheboygan, Wis. Besides her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by a grandson, Jimmy Olson, in infancy; a brother, Victor Calore; and two sisters, Yolanda Schraufnagel and Mafalda "Paula" Laguna. At the family's request, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 8, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl Pepin, presider. Rite of Committal will be held in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, with luncheon to follow in the parish hall. Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley. Relatives and friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
