Mary A. Harma, 88, of Hopkins, Minn., and a former
longtime Ironwood, Mich. resident, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010,
surrounded by her loving family, at the Presbyterian Home in Spring Park, Minn.. The former Mary A. Stampone was born March 12,
1922, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Daniel and Angeline (Giansanti)
Stampone, attended St. Ambrose and Central Grade School, and graduated from
Luther L. Wright High School in 1940. She then was employed at Champion Spark
Plug in Detroit during World War II. She was married to Carlo Isaac Harma on Nov.
10, 1943 at the St. Ambrose Church Rectory by the late Msgr. J.B. Moriarity.
Carlo preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1962. Following the death of her husband, Mary
attended night classes at Luther L. Wright High School and worked for Ahonen
Lumber Co. as a payroll clerk for seven years. She then was employed as an
administrative assistant at Gogebic Community College for 16 years, retiring in
June 1986. Mary was a member of Our Lady of Peace
Catholic Church in Ironwood, where she served as a pall lady for funerals, and
was a pink lady with the Grand View Hospital Auxiliary for 15 years. She enjoyed
golf and playing cards. Surviving are two daughters, Geraldine (Skip)
Peterson, Minnetonka, Minn., and Carolyn (Doug) Syreini, Ft. Myers, Fla.; four
grandchildren, Jeffrey (Tanya) Peterson, Prior Lake, Minn., Eric Peterson,
Loretto, Minn., Kristen Syreini, Port Orchard, Wash., and Ryan (Cari) Syreini,
Burlington, Wis.; two great-grandchildren, Kaden and Kalia Peterson; a sister,
Antoinette Pfieffer, Pensacola, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; and
sisters-in-law, Violet Stampone, Ironwood, and Irene and Dorothy Harma, both of
Hurley, Wis. Besides her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Stampone. Out of respect for Mary's wishes, cremation
has taken place. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. on
Saturday, Oct. 9, in the St. Joseph Family Room at Our Lady of Peace Church,
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m., with the Rev.
Darryl J. Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal and private interment will
follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. A luncheon reception will be held at
Tacconelli's in downtown Ironwood immediately upon the family's return from the
cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may
be made to the Our Lady of Peace Adopt-A-Student Program, 108 So. Marquette St.,
