Mary E. "Liz" Avery, 88, of Pioneer Park Apartments, Ironwood, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, in Ironwood. The former Mary Martin was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Ironwood, daughter of the late John and Bessie (Hughett) Martin, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1941. She was married to Earl J. Avery on May 15, 1946. He preceded her in death on April 6, 2001. Liz worked as a sales clerk at Kresge's in downtown Ironwood for 20 years. She was a member of the Oma Homemakers and bowled in Range area leagues for many years. She enjoyed crafts, playing cards and bingo, and going to the casino. She was also an avid reader, an excellent pasty maker, and a big Green Bay Packers fan. She loved animals and birds, especially her cockatiel, Marty Baby. Surviving are her son-in-law, Daniel Smith, Ironwood; six grandchildren, John Avery and Brian (Lori) Avery, both of Bessemer, Roger (Michelle) Avery, Wausau, Wis., Gary Avery Jr., Jacksonville, Fla., Christopher (Coreen) Smith, West Chicago, Ill., and Rebecca (Victor) Coker, Jersey City, N.J.; 10 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Paige, Abigail, Austin, Kyle, Jordan, Adriene, Dakata, Colin and Carter; a brother, Stanley "Dee" Martin (Shery), Pine Lake, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews, to include a very special niece, Barbara (Dave) Beckman, Ironwood. Besides her parents and husband, Liz was predeceased by a son, Gary, on June 26, 1982; daughter, Roberta "Bobbie" Smith, on July 6, 2010; grandson, Andrew Smith, in infancy; and two brothers, Harold Trethewey and Jack Martin.
