Obituary

Martha V. Anderson, 98, of Ironwood, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, in Hurley.      The former Martha Pohjola was born April 1, 1913, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Mathias and Lydia (Kangas) Pohjola, and attended the Erwin Township School.      She was married to Edward M. Anderson on July 6, 1934, at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran parsonage in Ironwood by the late Rev. Jacob Hirvi. Together, they raised their family and worked the family farm in Erwin Township. Edward preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1993.      Martha was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ironwood and the Zion Ladies Aid. She loved baking, cooking, canning, gardening, sewing and embroidery. She especially enjoyed spending quality time with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter.      Surviving are four sons, Gerald, Alameda, Calif., James (Sandy), Bessemer, Mich., David (Sandy), Clarion, Iowa, and Allan (Judy), Erwin Township; two daughters, Jean (Jack) Orso, Milwaukee, and Darlene (John) Perlberg, Ironwood; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Eleanor Hegbloom, Muskegon, Mich.; and numerous niece and nephews.      Besides her parents and husband, Martha was preceded in death by two sons, Robert, in 1986, and William, in 2003; son-in-law, John  Kangas, in 1987; daughter-in-law, Geraldine Anderson, in 2008; two brothers, Carl and John Pohjola; seven sisters, Elsie Pohjola in infancy, Mayme Erickson, Sigrid Kosevich, Lillian Erickson, Wilma Uitto, Sylvia Erickson and Ida Turavaara; and a step-granddaughter, Tiffany Smith, in 2007.      Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m.,  preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Peggy Rose, pastor, officiating.      Committal and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.      Pallbearers will be David and Paul Kangas, Brian Anderson, Rob Ahnen, Robert Anderson and Josh Smith.      Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.      Martha's obituary can be viewed online and condolences given to her family at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, Inc., Ironwood.      The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Pogliano, Mr. Wennersten, and all the staff at Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hurley for the wonderful, compassionate care given to Martha over the last ten years.
