Marian E. Turunen, 88, of Ironwood,
Mich., died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, in Hurley. The former Marian Peterson was born Nov. 25,
1920, in Ironwood, daughter of the late Peter William and Edith (Backlund)
Peterson, attended A.L. Norrie Grade School, and graduated from Luther L. Wright
High School in 1937. She worked as a telephone operator for
Michigan Bell Telephone Co. in downtown Ironwood until 1941, when she was united
in marriage to William Turunen on March 29, 1941, at Grace Lutheran Church in
Ironwood. Bill preceded her in death on March 1, 2002. A member of the former Grace Lutheran Church
in Ironwood, Marian served as church secretary for several years. She was also a
former member of the Gogebic County Community Mental Health Board of Directors.
She loved to bake and cook. Surviving are two daughters, Marie (Robert)
Kauppinen, Wausau, and Tina (Paul) Carlson, Ironwood and Lake Gogebic; four
grandchildren, Tim Kauppinen, Marshall, Wis., Tara Liesenfelder (Mark Marotz),
Clintonville, Brian (Angela) Carlson, Wallace, Mich., and Lori (Barry) Wicklund,
Mosinee; 13 great-grandchildren, Kelsie, Kambria, Kiala, Kaydon and Keion
Kauppinen, Mackenzie, Alyssa and Logan Liesenfelder, Wyatt and Garrett Carlson,
and Paige, Emily and Tristan Wicklund; a sister-in-law, Elma Urli, Nekoosa; a
brother-in-law, Carl (Doris) Sauter, Hurley; and several nieces, nephews and
cousins. Besides her parents and husband, Marian was
preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Sauter. In accordance with Marian's wishes, cremation
has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday,
Sept. 26, at 11 a.m., at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St.,
in Ironwood, with the Rev. Francis Strong officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the
