Margaret A. Olson, 93, of 404 N. Lake St., Ironwood, died Friday evening, May 8, 2009, in Ironwood. She was born Oct. 14, 1915, in Ironwood, daughter of the late William and Tekla (Lindquist) Olson, attended Central Grade School, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School with the Class of 1933. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1938 with a bachelor of science degree in Art Education, and was awarded a scholarship to Beaux d' Arts in Paris, France. Margaret taught all phases of Art in school districts in Ironwood and Grand Haven and Hurley, Wis. and Manitowish Waters, Wis. for many years, retiring in the 1970's. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood and its Evangelical Lutheran Church Women, Order of the Eastern Star and the Gogebic Range University of Wisconsin Alumni Association of Hurley. She played the piano in various local nursing homes and at USO functions when she resided in Chicago during World War Two. She was also an active supporter of Theatre North, the Ironwood Theater, Ironwood Area Historical Society and the Gogebic Community College Foundation. Margaret was very much into homeopathic medicine and astrological interpretations. An avid letter and postcard writer, she was passionate about corresponding weekly with her brother and her nieces and nephew. Surviving are her brother, Marcus Olson, Spokane, Wash.; a nephew, Maurice Olson Jr., Anaheim, Calif.; four nieces, Karen Olson (Eugene) Voss, Midlothian, Va., Lee Ann Olson (Rev. Peter) Bartlett, Onaway, Deborah Olson (Rick) Read, Monticello, Ind., and Carolyn Olson (Ric) Riniker, Platteville, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy (Tom) Erickson, Ironwood; and numerous great-nieces and nephews and former students. Besides her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by brothers, William E., Maurice R.J. and George L. Olson; and a sister, Ruth Jean Marie Olson in infancy. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 13, at 11 a.m., at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Christian Muellerleile and the Rev. Peter Bartlett co-officiating. Luncheon will immediately follow in the church fellowship hall. Private committal and interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Friends may call at the church from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Family pallbearers will be Maurice Olson, Rick Read and Geoffrey Bartlett.
