Margaret A. McGrath, 93, a former Ironwood resident, died Wednesday morning, July 11, 2007, at Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock. The former Margaret Kenney was born Nov. 24, 1913, in Mellen, Wis., daughter of the late Arthur and Margaret (Buckley) Kenney, attended grade school there, and graduated from Mellen High School with the Class of 1931. She attended summer school at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and Ashland County Normal School in Ashland, Wis. for one year, where she received her teaching certificate. Margaret taught first through eighth grade on Madeline Island for three years, and at Cozy Valley outside of Mellen for two years. She then moved to Milwaukee, where she worked at Allis-Chalmers Co. for nine years. She married Joseph E. McGrath on Feb. 16, 1946, at Gesu Catholic Church in Milwaukee, moving to Ironwood in 1957. Joseph preceded her in death on July 27, 1999. Margaret was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic in Ironwood, and the Pewabic Pens. She enjoyed gardening, berry picking, baking, and playing Scrabble. Surviving are a son, Dr. Patrick (Nancy Benninghouse), Wauwatosa, Wis.; three daughters, Anne (Charles) Chambers, Houghton; Barbara McGrath, Seattle, WA; and Eileen (Darryl) Small, Big Bay; six grandchildren, Abigail and Matthew Chambers, Sylva, N.C.; Martha and Patrick Geoghegan, Seattle; and Kevin and Andrew McGrath, Milwaukee; and two sisters-in-law, Dolly Kenney, Park Falls, Wis., and Margaret McGrath, Oconomowoc, Wis. Besides her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by six brothers, George, Louis, John, Francis, Canice, and Richard Kenney; and two sisters, Mary Kenney and Katherine Liebert. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 14, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Darryl Pepin, celebrant. Rite of Committal will be held in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church, with cremation to follow. Private inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Friends may call in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Margaret's grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Our Lady of Peace Endowment Fund or to the Gogebic Community College Foundation.
