Margaret "Lynn" LaPointe, 87, of
303 Taconite St., Hurley, a former longtime Mercer resident, died Wednesday,
Dec. 9, 2009, in her home, surrounded by her family, following a lengthy
illness. The former Margaret Doriot was born May 31,
1922, in a log house on the Manitowish River in Manitowish. She attended the
one-room school in Manitowish and graduated from Mercer High School in 1940. She
then attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Ashland and became a registered
nurse. Lynn was employed at Dr. Kate Newcomb Hospital
in Woodruff and at numerous doctor's offices in Milwaukee and Mercer. She
retired from LaCroix Hospital in White Pine, Mich. after many years of service
in the mid 1980's, returning to Manitowish and later to Mercer to live with her
sister, Helen. She was a member of the Mercer United
Methodist Church and the Auxiliary to White Pine American Legion Post 462, and
attended the Community Presbyterian Church in Manitowish Waters. She
volunteered at the Mercer Historical Society and at various community and church
events in Mercer over the years. A generous woman and a good listener, Lynn had
a quiet, loving disposition. She loved people, and loved to cook and fish. She
especially enjoyed the Manitowish River. She was reknown for her peanut bars and
molasses cookies. "Tea Time" was always an especially great time at her
home. Lynn was married to John O'Brien. They later
divorced. She was then married to Phillip LaPointe on
April 3, 1970, at St. Jude's Catholic Church in White Pine. Phillip preceded her
in death on Sept. 28, 2001. Surviving are three sons, John (Karen)
O'Brien, Manitowish, Michael (Faye) O'Brien, Houston, Texas, and Patrick (Anni)
O'Brien, Germany; step-children, Howard LaPointe, Columbus, Ohio, Sheila
(Martin) Robertson, White Pine, and Pam Schlosser (Lance Wernberg), Arpin; 26
grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren;
a daughter-in-law, Pam O'Brien, Apple Valley, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Elaine
Mears, Mercer; numerous nieces and nephews; and many, many dear
friends. Besides her parents and husband, Lynn was
preceded in death by a son, Kelly O'Brien; two granddaughters, Loretta LaPointe
and Deborah Hewitt; a great-grandson, Tony O'Brien; a step-daughter, Veronica
Store; her brother, Calvin Doriot; and four sisters, Wilda Organist, Lois
Ahlborn, Jacqueline Moderson and Helen Douville. Out of respect for Lynn's wishes, cremation
has taken place. A memorial service will be held Wednesday,
Dec. 16, at 11 a.m., at the Community Presbyterian Church on U.S. 51 in
Manitowish Waters, with the Rev. Chips Paulson, Pastor,
officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship
hall. Relatives and friends may call at the church
one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to
