Lyna H. Hariu, 95, of Kimball Township, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 in Hurley with her family by her side. She was born March 8, 1922 in Saxon, Wisconsin, daughter of the late John and Lilja (Jaskari) Luoma. Lyna attended the Saxon High School and was employed in Chicago. She was also employed in Los Angeles as a clerk at a tool company and then as a receptionist at St. Mary's Hospital in Superior. On August 11, 1945, Lyna was married to Oscar Hariu at the Zion Lutheran parsonage by the late Pastor Jacob Hirvi. With her husband, they owned and operated the Hariu Jewelry Store in Hurley until 1979. Lyna was then employed by Iron County Human Services, her "second family whom she loved" for 25 years until retirement at the age of 84. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Rachel Circle and the Kimball Homemakers. She also taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed reading, knitting, bird watching and golf. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lyna was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. She is survived by a daughter, Donna (Charles) Thomas of Mercer; five grandchildren, Joseph (Nicole) Hariu of Hurley, Matthew (Nicole) Hariu of Arkansas, Natalie (Brock) Swartz of Kimball, Stefani (Jerrid) Sielaff of Green Bay and Daniel (Becky) Thomas of Kimball; twelve great-grandchildren, Bryan, Brant, Devin, Landon, Virgil, Rysz, Brooke, Jake, Aili, Louis, Archie and Ava. Also surviving is her brother, Eugene (Joan) Luoma and her sister-in-law, Sonja Luoma, both of Saxon; and many special nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Lyna was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar on November 5, 1981, sons, James H. "Jamie" on November 16, 2005 and David of polio in 1953, a brother, John Luoma and sister, Helmi Hein. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood at 11 a.m. Rev. Lisa Ubbelohde will officiate. Lyna's family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday.
