Obituary

Lucy Frances Hocking, 100, of North Mankato, Minn. and formerly of Ironwood, Mich., died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, in North Mankato. Mrs. Hocking was born on Feb. 9, 1907, in Hay River, Wis., the ninth of eleven children of Ole and Lucy (James) Vennes. She graduated from high school in Menomonie, Wis. and attended Dunn County Normal School. She taught in country schools for four years, returned to River Falls, Wis. State Teachers College in 1929-30, then taught junior high in Elk Mound, Wis. for three years. She married James Hocking on June 10, 1933, in Elk Mound. They lived in Kenton, Mich., Bessemer Township, and Ironwood. James preceded her in death in 1978. Lucy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ironwood for 40 years, where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, and served as deacon. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Ron Gower of Good Thunder, Minn.; grandsons, Owen Gower of Burnsville, Minn. and Hugh Gower (Angie Alberda), of Mankato; and a great-grandson, Cade Gower, Mankato. Besides her parents and husband, Lucy was preceded in death by a son, James, in 1963; five brothers and five sisters. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1, at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church, 301 E. Aurora St., in Ironwood, with Dr. Jack Fashbaugh officiating. Light luncheon and refreshments will be served in the church hall immediately following the service. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
