Lloyd H. Wertanen, 83, of
Ironwood, died Monday, June 25, 2012, in Ironwood. He was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Ramsay, Mich.,
son of the late Herman and Fanny (Anderson) Wertanen, attended grade school
there, and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1946. He then attended
Gogebic Community College for two years and Northern Michigan University in
Marquette. Lloyd served four years on active duty in the
U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged as a
staff sergeant on July 13, 1955. He then spent eight years in the U. S. Air
Force Reserves. He was employed for many years in TV sales and
repair at Johnson Music Store in downtown Ironwood, and was self-employed in
that same field in his retirement. An avid bowler, he bowled in Range area
leagues for many years. He was also an avid golfer and served for 16 years on
the Eagle Bluff Golf Club board of directors in Hurley. Crossword puzzles were
Lloyd's passion. On Dec. 27, 1952, he married the former Doris
Arlene Symons in Ironwood. She preceded him in death on April 3,
1975. Surviving are a son, Jeff (Sue), Apple Valley,
Minn., and daughter, Beth Wertanen, Cottage Grove, Minn.; two grandchildren,
Neal and Cassie Wertanen; his special partner, Jean Petranek, and her family
Nichole and Bill Quakenbush and their daughter, Emily; numerous nieces and
nephews; lifelong friend, Clyde Randall; and all of his golfing
buddies. Besides his parents and wife, Lloyd was
preceded in death by a brother, David; and two sisters, Mabel Sorman and
Jeanette Zingler. Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has
taken place and private services and interment in Riverside Cemetery,
