Lloyd S. Baima, 82, of 105 7th Ave. No., Hurley, died peacefully Saturday afternoon, June 14, 2008, in Ironwood, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy illness. He was born July 2, 1925, in Pence, Wis., son of the late Steve and Jennie (Baima) Baima, attended grade school there, and graduated from Hurley High School in 1943. He then served for 2 1/2 years in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations as a radioman aboard the USS Petrof Bay, and was honorably discharged in 1946. Following his discharge, Lloyd returned to Hurley, where he worked with his father at Baima Bottling Co. until 1966. He received an associate of arts degree from Gogebic Community College in 1963, a bachelor of arts degree in English from Northland College in Ashland, Wis. in 1965, and a master's degree in Elementary Guidance Counseling from Superior State University in Superior, Wis. in August, 1967. He then was employed in the Hurley School District for 23 years, retiring in 1990. Lloyd was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley and served as a Eucharistic Minister, and was a member of the Blue Army. He was a life member of Hurley American Legion Post 58, Iron County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1580 and Hurley Knights of Columbus Council 669, where he served as past Grand Knight and treasurer. He also belonged to the Wisconsin Education Association and was a driver for the Aging Unit of Iron County. Lloyd spent his life in service to his community and devotion to his family. On June 26, 1948, he was married to the former Dorothy J. Gorrilla of Ironwood at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ironwood, by the late Rev. Edward Mihalik. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Dr. Robert (Catherine Baumann), Oak Park, Ill., Stephen (Laura), Sulphur Springs, Tx., and Edward, Tomah, Wis.; three daughters, Susan Barker, Verona, Wis., Mary Jo (Randy) Coleman, Richland Center, Wis., and Cathy (John) Burt, Janesville, Wis.; eleven grandchildren, Jennie (Mike) Gray, Mt. Horeb, Wis., Marcie (Jamie) Stebbeds, Verona, Mike (Jessica) Bretall, Barneveld, Wis., Marie and Alex Baima, Oak Park, Erin Baima, Denton, Tx., Morgan Baima, Austin, Tx., Lucas and Adam Coleman, Richland Center, Ryan Burt, Madison, Wis., and Kyle Burt, Janesville; five great-grandchildren, Landen, Brady, Emma, Kallie and Hailee; two sisters, Mary Ann (John) Novak, Ironwood and Delores Fresacher, Ashland; numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews; and a brother-and- sister-in-law, Edward and Florence Gorrilla, Fargo, N.D. Besides his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by a grandson, Caleb Coleman, in 1997; and a sister, Elizabeth Madden. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated today, Monday, June 16, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Michael Hayden, celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment took place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley, where full military rites were accorded by the combined Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron County VFW Post 1580 Honor Guard. Luncheon was served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the cemetery. Visitation was held at the church one hour prior to Mass on Monday. Pallbearers were Ryan and Kyle Burt, Lucas and Adam Coleman, Jamie Stebbeds, Mike Gray, Mike Bretall and Alex Baima.
