Lillian M. Tillner, 87, of
Iron Belt, Wis., died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, in Ironwood. The former Lillian Kangas was born Sept. 5,
1922, in Iron Belt, daughter of the late Samuel and Senja (Lantta) Kangas, and
graduated from Iron Belt High School in 1940. She was employed as a waitress at the Club
Carnival in downtown Hurley for several years, then owned and operated Diamond
Lil's Bar in Iron Belt for a number of years. She retired as director of the
Iron County Aging Unit in 1984. Lillian was a member of Zion Lutheran Church
in Ironwood, a 60-year member of the Auxiliary to Iron County Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 1580, and a member of the National Finnish-American Festival.
She enjoyed sewing and painting. She was married to Wilbur E. Kivi on August 1,
1942. He preceded her in death in 1963. She then married Dougal Tillner on Oct. 10,
1969, in Duluth, Minn. He preceded her in death in 1996. Surviving are a daughter, Lynn (Charles)
Thrasher, Carol Stream, Ill.; grandson, James Thrasher (Sarah Petersen), Carol
Stream; sister, Dorothy Harma, Hurley; step-daughter, Rubie (Richard) Laajala,
Belmont, Calif.; two step-grandchildren, Carl and Kristie Tillner; and numerous
nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husbands, Lillian was
preceded in death by two sons, William A. Kivi, in 1975 and Kurtis Kivi, in
2008; a granddaughter, Senja Kivi, in 1987; three brothers, Clarence, Tyko and
Samuel Kangas; and a step-son, Terry Tillner. Out of respect for her wishes, cremation has
taken place. Memorial services will be held at a later date
