Obituary

Lillian (Lija) Shouldice, 86, of Mountain View Rd., Ironwood Township, passed away early Sunday morning, Oct. 12, 2008, in San Rafael, Calif., with her children by her side. The former Lillian Laine was born Dec. 7, 1921 in Puritan Location, Bessemer, to the late Edvart Nestori (Mannisto) and Hilja Amanda (Nieminen) Sireeni Laine, both Finnish immigrants. She graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer in 1939 and was a member of the marching band. She had fond memories of the french horn and the importance of the band in her younger years. Following graduation, she traveled to Ann Arbor and worked at the Willow Run B-24 plant during World War II. Lillian married the love of her life, Bond Joseph Shouldice on Nov. 14, 1945, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Ironwood. Their life revolved around their family, enjoying their home, spending winters in Ft. Myers Beach, Fla. and having a great partnership. Bond preceded her in death on July 3, 2002, She missed him dearly. Lillian was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and its' Circle, and was a Grand View Hospital Auxiliary volunteer and did great displays. She was a great cook, and enjoyed gardening, sewing and painting. In later years, Lillian relaxed doing difficult crossword puzzles and watching birds and wildlife in her backyard. Her grand dogs were a big part of her life. As walking on the beach became difficult, watching the sunsets remained a constant joy. In life, Lillian was a giver and leaves behind a legacy of love and friendship. Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Laine Shouldice Sanders of San Rafael, and son, Michael Bond Shouldice (Patricia Christie), of Victoria, Minn.; a sister, Bertha Ravey, of Burnsville, Minn. and Mercer, Wis.; a cousin, Barney Salmi, of Ironwood; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Toivo John Laine of Essexville and Reino Edward Laine of Bessemer. Out of respect for Lillian's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m., at Wesley United Methodist Chruch in Ironwood, with the Rev. Rosemary DeHut officiating. Committal services will take place at the church, with luncheon to follow in the church fellowship hall. Private inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. Memorials are preferred to Wesley United Methodist Church, 500 E. McLeod Ave., Ironwood, Mich. 49938.
