Lillian M. Anderson, 84, of
1005 E. Margaret St., Ironwood, Mich., died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, in St.
Mary's Hospice in Duluth.
The former Lillian Helmes was born Dec. 20,
1925, in Iron Belt, Wis., daughter of the late August and Maria (Nevala) Helmes.
She attended elementary grades in Iron Belt and the 8th grade at Roosevelt
School in Ironwood Township, and moved to Ironwood with her family in 1938. She
graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1943 and North Central Bible
College in Minneapolis in 1946. Except for a short period of time in Seattle,
Wash. and Long Beach, Calif., Lillian has lived in this area. Her employment
included many years of secretarial and bookkeeping at Ahonen Lumber Co.,
Industrial Piping Co., several law offices, and Gogebic Adult Services. For
seven years, along with her husband and son, she operated a special contract
home for mentally disabled adults, retirng in 1992. Lillian was a member of the Assembly of God
Church in Ironwood and served as church organist/pianist for 69 years. She also
served in various other capacities in church from time to time, including
Women's Ministries. For many years she also served as treasurer of the Gogebic
Association for Retarded Citizens and volunteered countless hours in service to
the mentally and physically disabled. Her interests included her much-loved
grandchildren and great-grandchildren, church, music, crafts, reading and
quilting. Lillian married Arthur Anderson on March 5,
1955, in Long Beach, Calif. where they lived a short time before returning to
this area. Art preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 2001. Surviving are her two children, Susan Tinoco
and Peter (Lori) Anderson, both of Ironwood; six grandchildren, Jennifer
(Joshua) LaMaide, Elizabeth (Steven) Bardon, and Phillip Tinoco, all of
Wakefield, Mich., Joshua Tinoco, Ironwood, Peter (Leslie) Anderson, Ironwood
Township, and Michael (Ali) Anderson, Ironwood; four great-grandchildren,
Antonio Tinoco, and Alyssa, Tanner and Logan LaMaide; a brother, Alvar Helmes,
Battle Ground, Wash., a sister, Ina Lehocky, Milwaukee; 34 beloved nieces and
nephews; and family member and friend, Jose Tinoco, of Ironwood. Besides her parents and husband, she was
preceded in death by brothers Toivo, Ahti, Norman and Edward Helmes; and sisters
Tyyne Hendrickson, Toini Saari, Ruth Hendrickson and Taimi
Anderson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept.
11, at 11 a.m., at the Assembly of God Church, 2100 E. Cloverland Drive, in
Ironwood, with the Rev. Mark Ortman, pastor, officiating. Committal will take place at the church, with
luncheon to follow in the church fellowship hall. Private interment will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Ironwood. Relatives and friends may call at the church
one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Phillip and Joshua Tinoco,
