Obituary

Leroy D. Kountney, 70, of Mercer, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012, at Park Manor Nursing Home in Park Falls.      He was born July 21, 1942, in Ironwood, Mich., son of the late Stanley and Florence (Harper) Kountney, and was raised in Mercer, where he attended grade and high school. He then served his country in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged.      Leroy worked as a driller/blaster at White Pine Copper Co. from 1962-1970. He married Phyllis J. Gray on Sept. 19, 1975, in Waukegan, Ill. They then resided in Albuquerque, N.M. for 18 years before returning to Mercer in 1997.      Leroy was a member of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Mercer. He loved people and country and western music.      Surviving are his wife Phyllis, of 36 years; two sisters, Audrey Zastrow and Donna Hauck; brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Donald (Rose) Gray, Pat (Don) Porcaro, Thomas Gray, Sandra (Dan) Eesley, and Wayne (Sue) Gray; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend and caregiver, Charlie Alexandroni.      Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Leroy Jr., in infancy; and brother, Stanley Kountney Jr.      Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Mercer, with Deacon Norbert Brossmer officiating.      Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Mercer Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the combined Mercer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9536 and Mercer-Manitowish Waters American Legion Post 424 Honor Guard.      Lunch will be served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the cemetery.      Pallbearers will be Darrell Swearingen, Donald, Thomas and Wayne Gray, Tom Thompson, and Dan Eesley.      Condolences may be given online at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.      Arrangements are entrusted to McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, Inc., Ironwood.      The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Leroy's niece, funeral director Levana Gray, for her special efforts in preparing Leroy for burial.
