Leroy N. 'Lee" Carlson, 84, of 339 E. Tamarack St., Ironwood, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, in Ironwood. He was born April 19, 1923, in Ironwood, son of the late Ernest and Anna (Erickson) Carlson, attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1941. He was then employed by the Ex-Cello Corp. in their defense plant in Detroit for a short time. Leroy enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on August 29, 1942, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a sergeant on Oct. 17, 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to Ironwood and was employed with Lake Superior District Power Co., Northern States Power and Excel Energy, retiring as a customer service representative in 1982. Leroy was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Ironwood American Legion Post 5, and the Ironwood Masonic Lodge. He served as chairman of the local Easter Seal Drive for several years, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. On Sept. 22, 1955, he was married to the former Mary E. Blomquist at Grace Lutheran Church in Ironwood, by the late Rev. John Kendall. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mary Lee (Lynwood) Stewart, Seattle, Wash.; two grandsons, Brian and Christopher Stewart, Seattle; a brother-in-law, Edward Blomquist, and sister-in-law, Carol Blomquist, both of Ironwood; two cousins, Cleone Trevarthen, Ironwood, and Gordon (Ione) Carlson, Cleveland, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Leroy was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Betty Blomquist, and brother-in-law, John Blomquist. Private family services were held.
