Leone E. Gulan, 102, of
Southgate Village, Hurley, Wis., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at Aspirus Grand
View Hospital in Ironwood. The former Leone Sawicki was born Nov. 26,
1910, in Ironwood, daughter of the late John and Josephine (Sentkowski) Sawicki,
and attended Ironwood schools. She was employed as a housekeeper in Chicago and
Minneapolis for a short time, and cooked at the Liberty Bell Chalet in Hurley
for ten years. Leone was a member of St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Hurley and its Council of Catholic Women, the Hurley Woman's Club and
the Golden Years Club. She was an excellent cook and baker and enjoyed reading
and playing cards. On May 11, 1935, she was married to Anton
Gulan at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Saxon by the Rev. Girouard. Anton preceded
her in death on July 1, 1976. Surviving are three sons, Larry, Ironwood,
Gene (Kay), Wausau, Wis., and Tony (Jeanne), Shell Lake, Wis.; 12 grandchildren;
25 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Martha Gulan, Maple Grove, Minn.;
brothers-and-sisters-in-law, David Gulan, Virginia, Minn., Martha Hojnacki,
Arkansas, Carol Ozello, Wakefield, Shirley Gulan, Cape Coral, Fla., Margaret
Gulan, Ironwood, Marian Sawicki, Port Jervis, N.Y., and Delores Sawicki, Cudahy,
Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Leone was
preceded in death by a daughter, Cathryn Foster, in 1957; a son, Jerry, in 2012;
brothers, John, Stanley, Jerome, Anton, Joseph and Henry Sawicki; and a sister,
Julia Proctor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated
Saturday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM,
celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in
St. Mary's Cemetery, Hurley. Luncheon will be served at the Iron Nugget in
downtown Hurley immediately upon return from the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Leone's grandsons, to
include Scott, Mark, Jeff, Steve, Jon, Dan and Bob Gulan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may
be made to St. Mary's Church, 404 Iron St., Hurley, WI 54534. Condolences can be given to Leone's family
