Leonard F. Hughes, 76, of
Ironwood Township, Mich., died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at Ashland Health and
Rehabilitation Center, after a lengthy battle with kidney and Alzheimer's
disease. He was born Jan. 3, 1936, in Traverse City,
Mich., son of the late Russell and Violet (Sutter) Hughes, and graduated from
Traverse City High School in 1956. He attended Northwestern Michigan Junior
College, then served stateside in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge on
Aug. 4, 1962. Leonard married the former Hartha K. Arnold on
May 28, 1960, in Traverse City. They came to Ironwood Township in 1973, where
they owned and operated the Ironwood Mobile Home Park until their
retirement. Leonard played tennis while in college, and
pitched softball in church leagues in Traverse City. He enjoyed archery, deer
hunting, and his MGA roadsters. He attended the Assembly of God Church on
Cloverland Drive in Ironwood. Surviving are his wife, Hartha, of 52 years; a
son, Craig (Amy), Hancock, Mich.; daughter, Cherie Roderick, Parker, Colo.; two
grandchildren, Katy and Kristy Roderick, both of Parker; two sisters, Paulina
(Emery) Savage, Williamsburg, Mich., and Shirley Lewis, Traverse City; and five
nephews, Mike Savage, Mark Savage, Brian Savage, Devin Lewis and Tad Lewis, all of Traverse
City. Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 13, at
9:30 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m., at the Assembly of God
Church, 2100 E. Cloverland Drive, in Ironwood, with the Rev. Mark Ortman,
pastor, officiating. Committal will take place at the church, where
full military honors will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5
Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship
hall. Private interment will be in Sunset Acres
Cemetery, Ironwood Township, in the spring. Condolences may be given to Leonard's family
