Obituary

Leonard J. "Len" Calligaro, 89, of Hurley, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011, in Ironwood.      He was born June 24, 1921, in Hurley, Wis., son of the late John and Lena (Calvi) Calligaro, attended Hurley schools, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1939.      He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received a bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry with a minor in physical education in 1943. While at Wisconsin, Len played football in the backfield for Coach Harry Stuhldeher, one of the Four Horseman of Notre Dame under the legendary Knute Rockne. He then played professional football for the Green Bay Packers in 1944 and the New York Giants from 1944-1948, and was the starting quarterback for the Giants when they won the NFC championship in 1944.      Following his football career, Len was employed as a part-time cattle buyer, then worked at Plankington Packing Co. in Milwaukee. He retired as manager in the catalog receiving department of J.C. Penney Co. in Milwaukee in 1983.      Len was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley and the Aurora Athletic Club in Ironwood. He enjoyed fishing and following Range athletics, and served as commissioner of the Iron County Women's Softball League for many years.      Surviving are a daughter, Corinne MacPartland, and granddaughter, Brianne Herrman, both of Wichita, Ks.; and special friends and caregivers, Joe and Trudy Pinardi and daughters, Hurley, and Diane Oberst, Ironwood.      Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Martin Calligaro; sister, Dorothy Potiandy; and uncle, Marco Calligaro.      As per Len's wishes, cremation has taken place.      Visitation will be held Saturday, July 9, beginning at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley, followed by a Mass  of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 a.m., with the Rev.
